Removing the American Idols

Like other nations, America has its idols. Idolatry, like witchcraft, is becoming rampant in America. We, as believers, must recognize the idolatry in America. If we don’t, we may find ourselves approaching brick walls in the hearts of people. Among the idols that are present in America, political idolatry and political demagoguery is rising and fueling rage and violence in the land. Against that backdrop, what is God saying to the Church in America and America itself. That’s what I’d like to talk about in this post.
Recently, on my daily broadcast, I’ve been speaking on how God will bring our American idols to ruin. The key scripture for that word can be found in Zephaniah 2:11, “The LORD will terrify them as he destroys all the gods in the land. Then nations around the world will worship the LORD, each in their own land.” In other words, judgment is coming on the idols of America. Their sustenance is being removed and those idols will be exposed as empty, hollow shells.
Amidst the emerging idols of America, the Church must rise to offer an alternative to those idols that have shaped people’s lives: political ideology, race baiting, systemic greed, religious authoritarianism, utopian communal tribalism, secular humanism, globalism, and a myriad of other idols. The rise of ancient deities in movies, books, art, and music is and should be concerning. Yes, we’ve seen Norse, Greek, Roman, Babylonian, Indian, and other gods being presented as powerful on screens across America.
The Church must remember where the power is — the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As the Apostle Paul said, “I have complete confidence in the gospel; it is God's power to save all who believe, first the Jews and also the Gentiles.” Rom. 1:16, Good News Translation. Yes, as He did then, so He does now, “the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” Mark 16:20. God still confirms His Word when it’s preached. God has never stopped confirming His Word with supernatural signs and power.
We’ve lost the power. Why? Because we’ve lost prayer. Older believers who knew how to pray have passed away. Older ministers who carried the fire of heaven have ascended to heaven. And the earth lay barren, brutal, and in bondage to darkness. Idols fill our land. It seems idolatry has invaded every space and place in America. We’ve become a nation of idolators who worship God on Sunday, but on Monday another god replaces God’s rule in our lives. And the God of heaven watches us, grieved by our sin, jealous over the loss of Christ’s bride to the myriad of idols, including the iPhones we’re so diligent to use daily, even hourly or moment by moment. Like I said, idols abound.
The only question: Will we acknowledge our sin? Will we return to God through repentance? Will we lay down the idols in our hands, homes, and hearts? God is a jealous God. As God told Moses, “You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.” Exod. 20:5, NLT. And that affection runs deep, even in our churches. As the prophet Ezekiel said, “So I went in and looked, and I saw portrayed all over the walls all kinds of crawling things and unclean animals and all the idols of Israel.” Ezek. 8:10, NIV.
Dig prophets! Dig! Discover her idols! Discover what My bride has kept hidden in secret places! Turn her affection towards Me, for I Am jealous over the loss I’ve suffered, the affection of My bride. I’ve given her space to repent, to turn back to Me, to lay downs her idols and pick up holy garments that she might abide by My side and walk with Me day by day, for that is what I desire, says the Lord. Now is the time to turn towards Me before deep darkness covers the land. Turn! Turn! Turn! Says the Lord. For I Am giving you this year and the next to repent so I might turn this land towards Me, says the Lord. For I desire a holy bride, one that’s free from the pride of man and bondage to the enemy. Be loosed from the grip of darkness into the liberty of My Son, for your beloved bridegroom will come again, says the Lord. And then shall everyone see the fire in His eyes for His bride who’s to be dressed in white for the coming day when My light will wash everything away.
Isn’t it time to turn back to God?!
Let us pray!
