The Idol of Ministry

The prophet Zephaniah makes this bold statement in Zephaniah 2:11, NLT, “The LORD will terrify them as he destroys all the gods in the land. Then nations around the world will worship the LORD, each in their own land.” In the King James Version it says, He will “famish all the gods of the earth.” America has many idols. The Church also has its own idols. One of the BIG idols in the Church is the ministry idol. That’s what I’d like to talk about in this post.
The Bible speaks of ministry. Ministry, as revealed in the Bible, is a good thing. And the Apostle Paul calls his son in the faith, Timothy, and us, to “fully carry out the ministry God has given you.” 2 Timothy 4:5, NLT. Those were the Apostle Paul’s final words to his son in the faith. So, ministry is important. Yet today, we have turned this calling into a career, a job that will sometimes depart from the Biblical definition of ministry. Not that I am against ministers giving themselves over to the ministry. We should. But we must maintain the integrity of the word ministry — service.
The Church is about serving. Its leaders are called to serve. Not just serve themselves, their families, their congregation members, their friends, their neighbors, and others, but those who least deserve what we have to give. The Church is and was meant to be service oriented. That’s why we have church services as the Church. Jesus made this statement: “None of you should be called the leader. The Messiah is your only leader.” Matt. 23:10, CEV. Then, He made His point: “Whoever is the greatest should be the servant of the others.” Matt. 23:11, CEV.
The greatest leaders in Christ’s body are those who serve. Come rain or shine or sleet or snow, the minister is the one who serves. Yet today, we have many who lead. They bellow out commands as if they’re the ones who control over the wind, waves, sea, ocean, and earth. If ministers ever become that person, they have left the ministry of Jesus behind. The ministry of Jesus isn’t about pointing fingers at fellow believers. The ministry of Jesus isn’t about promoting our ministry. The ministry of Jesus exists to build God’s kingdom.
How does the kingdom of God grow? That’s right! Ministry. We need men and women of God to teach us the Bible. Not only the truths we know, but the truths we need to know and the truths we should know but don’t know. Yet, not only an educational knowledge; rather, an experiential knowledge that’s rooted in the revelation of who Christ is, what Christ has done, and what Christ will do. That knowledge includes tearing down the things in us that oppose Christ. Unless Christ is all, He isn’t Lord of all we are and say we do.
Jesus doesn’t accept second place in our lives, even if second place is spreading the Good News of who He is. When those who labor for Him begin to serve themselves (their wants, needs, and desires) on the back of who He is, that’s when ministry has become an idol in our lives. In reality, the idol of ministry can become a place of self exaltation rather than a place of self examination where our supposed spirituality is rooted in self. I can think of no more dangerous place for any leader to be than the place of self exaltation, self aggrandization, and self actualization. The idol of ministry is rooted in self — self worship.
Unfortunately, much of what we do is rooted in self. The Church has become so focused on self that we cannot recognize Christ standing in our midst. Still, Jesus stands at the door, knocking, seeking an entrance into His own Church. While we build our platforms, we fail to give Him, the Lord of ALL, His platform. That’s why we are a divided church, a race based church, and a tribal church. We’ve become a religious conglomerate not Christ’s body and bride. And behind the rise of that kind of ministry is the idol of ministry, which has come to impact everything the Church does today.
Yes, that idol will fall. It must fall! It cannot remain, for God Himself will tolerate no other gods. God is still a jealous God. His character and nature as a jealous God hasn’t changed. And the Church is about to come to that realization, as the idol of ministry is brought to His feet, to pay homage to Him.
Let us pray!
