Do you know the language of the Holy Spirit? Not only speaking in tongues, but the deeper ways the Holy Spirit speaks to us. Yes, God the Holy Spirit is speaking to us — you and me. And to speak to us, as believers, He (not she, as some have falsely taught), will use a spiritual language to communicate with us. Further, for us to know what He’s saying to us, we must learn His language — the language of the Spirit — for that is how the Holy Spirit speaks to us — His language not ours. That’s what I’d like to talk about in this post.

In other words, we cannot live for Christ under our own power, might, or ability. No, it requires the Holy Spirit’s enablement for us to live the Christian life. In the Old Testament, the prophet Zechariah, speaking by the Holy Spirit, said, “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the LORD of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6, NKJV. That passage was foretelling of the day we are living in right now. Everything we do as believers is to be done by and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Of course, how can we do what the Holy Spirit tells us to do unless we know what He’s saying? We can’t. To do what God the Holy Spirit tells us to do, we must first know what He’s saying. For that to happen, we must know the language of the Spirit. It’s that simple.
Unfortunately, far too many believers try to live for Christ out of their own flesh; they have a religion of the mind not a relationship with God in the Spirit; they don’t know the language of the Spirit. And the scripture teaches us, “the carnal mind is enmity against God”. Romans 8:7, NKJV. In other words, the carnal minded person always fights God and God’s ways, and they are unwilling to surrender to the Holy Spirit’s work. In truth, every work a believer does is to begin in the Spirit not of the flesh. Yet today, that is the rare exception rather than the rule. Why? We are carnally minded and the carnal mind cannot know or understand the language of the Spirit.
The language of the Spirit uses spiritual words to speak to us. Hear what the Apostle Paul says, “This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.” 1 Corinthians 2:13, NIV. In other words, to understand the Holy Spirit’s ways, we must learn the Holy Spirit’s words. Yes, the Holy Spirit uses words to speak to us. Isn’t that what Christ taught? He said, “It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.” John 6:63, New Heart English Bible. Did we hear what Jesus said? “The flesh profits nothing”. Nothing! Nada! Zilch!
Why then, do we rely so heavily on our own ability? We haven’t learned the language of the Spirit. We don’t know what He’s saying. That’s completely at odds with how the early Church operated. In Acts 13:2, NIV, we read, “While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’” Notice, the Holy Spirit initiated the apostolic work and apostolic ministry of Saul (who was later called Paul) and Barnabas. It wasn’t their will that called them into apostolic ministry. Rather, the Holy Spirit initiated the apostolic call. Today, apostles are ordained by men who haven’t been called by the Spirit. Awful!!! No wonder we lack apostolic power, what we have is of the flesh.
The Holy Spirit is very personal. He speaks to each person as He chooses to speak to them. Then, it’s incumbent on each of us to learn how He speaks to us individually. Oftentimes, that’s the missing piece to most believers lives; they don’t know or haven’t learned how the Holy Spirit speaks to them…individually. Until we learn how the Holy Spirit talks with us personally, we are unable to live life in the Holy Spirit. That’s why so many believers are frustrated in their walk with God — they’ve never learned or been taught how the Holy Spirit speaks and communicates with them personally. In other words, we talk about having a relationship with the Holy Spirit without actually knowing how the Holy Spirit speaks to us.
Do you see our dilemma? We don’t know the language of the Holy Spirit. And until we are ready and willing to learn the language of the Spirit, we are of little to no to the kingdom of God. It takes the Holy Spirit’s work for the work of the kingdom of God to prosper. God’s work begins by and through the Holy Spirit. For that work to begin in and through us, we must learn the language of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is speaking powerful words to you and me right now, but they must be spiritually discerned. That means, we’ve actually learned the language of the Spirit, communicate with the Holy Spirit, follow His leading, and speak and declare His words. That’s how the early Church began, and that’s how God wants His Church to continue today — by us learning how to hear, speak, and understand the language of the Spirit.
