The Worst Sin You Regularly Commit

There is one sin that is worse than all other sins that mankind can commit. That sin is worse than murder, adultery, homosexuality, theft, pornography, gossip, and a host of other “evil” sins. Yet the scripture names this particular sin as evil but doesn’t describe other sins as being evil. And this particular sin, which the Bible calls evil, we don’t think anything about our committing this sin, which we regularly do. What sin am I speaking of? One sin. The sin of unbelief. That’s what I’d like to talk about in this post.

With all of the recent exposure of sin within the body of Christ, I thought it important to confront the most evil sin in the Church, a sin which believers, if we can call ourselves that, regularly commit. Rather than demonstrating faith in God, oftentimes we reveal our cowardice towards God. The same command given to Joshua stands today: “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9, NLT. Still, we face fear in the face of adversity and our adversaries. Nevertheless, in the face of that fear, we are called to demonstrate faith in God.

Faith isn’t a side item in the Church. No, it’s the heart and soul of every Church and believer’s life. In truth, our lives depend on believing God. If you haven’t come to that moment where you needed to have faith in God, I have good news and bad news — your day is coming. There’s always a trial of the faith that we have or a revelation of the faith that we lack. At least, that’s what the Apostle Peter said, “Your faith will be like gold that has been tested in a fire. And these trials will prove that your faith is worth much more than gold that can be destroyed.” 1 Peter 1:7, CEV. 

Yes, God desires to showcase our faith or expose our unbelief. And we should be grateful for that. Why is that? Because unbelief is sin. In fact, it’s the worst possible sin. Now, I know some of you might disagree with me on that point. Consider, the writer of Hebrews admonishes us, “Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.” Hebrews 3:12, ESV. If you are concerned about anything, you should be concerned about your faith in God or lack of faith in God. Hear me, unbelief is the only sin that condemns anyone to hell. That’s it.

And yet, we emphasize other sins. We point to other sins as the worst sins. And truth be told, many of those sins are awful, depraved, and vile. But that doesn’t change this truth: the sin God calls evil isn’t any of the sins we regularly speak of; rather, the sin of unbelief is THE most vile, wicked, depraved, and deplorable sin in God’s eyes. Unbelief. In God’s eyes, unbelief is the worst possible sin. Yet oftentimes, we don’t think anything of that sin. In fact, some don’t believe unbelief is sin. We can even be deceived into thinking we’re exercising wisdom. It’s not wisdom to disbelief God. No, it’s sin, for “everything that is not from faith is sin.” Romans 14:23, Berean Standard Bible.

Why am I bringing up this most vile, wicked, and evil sin? Because we rarely pay attention to it. Instead, we are engrossed and engaged with or against other sins. And we think nothing of our own unbelief. To us, oftentimes, it’s not sin. Further, we rarely, if ever, confront this sin in our own hearts, let alone the hearts of others. An unbelieving Church, and believers filled with unbelief, demonstrates our own backsliden condition. For that, I have one word that we desperately need to hear — repent! Only that word, and our response to it, can bring us out from our state of unbelief. 

May God give us the ears we need to hear that word! And may God raise up prophets once again to speak that word. That’s what we need. “Let the priests, the ministers of Jehovah, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Jehovah, and give not thy heritage to reproach, that the nations should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the peoples, Where is their God?” Joel 2:17, ASV. This, and this alone, will ignite the fires of revival in America. Selah.
