In America, we live in a free nation. Not every nation has what we have, as was seen through the lives of World Cup players being amazed by what we have in America that we take for granted — liberty. We live in a nation blessed with freedoms that we don’t even realize we have and regularly take for granted. And liberty is under attack. Not everyone celebrates the blessing of liberty. Some celebrate bondage. They want to make others their slaves. Jesus came to “proclaim liberty to the captives”. Luke 4:18. Yes, the blessing of true liberty and freedom can only come from and through Christ. That’s what I’d like to talk about in this post.
Liberty is a blessing. When anyone has lived a life where they’ve been held in bondage by anything or anyone, and they taste the freedom of liberty, they will fight tooth and nail to keep the liberty they now possess. For those who’ve only known liberty and freedom, they often don’t realize just how precious the liberty they have is until they lose it. And liberty, once lost, is not easily recovered. It takes great pain and effort, sacrifice, to recover liberty once lost. We see that in nations like Venezuela, Cuba, and Iran. At one point, all these nations had freedom. Then, they lost it. Now, it seems impossible to recover that lost liberty.
Liberty is fragile. Freedom is not a given in much of this world. We still have slavery in our world today. In fact, there are more slaves numerically today than at any time in mankind’s history — 50+ million people. That slavery exists despite history’s proofs that all mankind is born free under the tree of liberty and can only be enslaved through violent coercion, abuse, and inhuman acts. Yes, it’s inhuman to hold people in slavery. It’s condemned in scripture. In Exodus 21:16, ESV, we read, “Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death.” Yes, under the Old Covenant, it carried the strictest penalty — death — for both the perpetrator and benefactor of slavery.
Thomas Jefferson, America’s third president, stated, “The tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” Why is Jefferson’s quote so important to understand? In his statement, we the price of liberty is blood, of those seeking liberty and those standing in opposition to liberty. Both exist simultaneously. And there is ever a war between them. The one seeks to hold men and women in bondage, the other seeks to free them. And there’s no middle ground between them.

The fight for liberty and freedom exists because we live in a fallen world enslaved by sin and Satan. Yes, we have an adversary who opposes freedom and free people because slaves are easy to control. The Devil’s subjects are bound in his kingdom, captured in his cages, where he refuses to let them go. The prophet Isaiah, in seeing behind the curtain of flesh, saw who Satan really is, “Everyone there will stare at you and ask, ‘Can this be the one who shook the earth and made the kingdoms of the world tremble? Is this the one who destroyed the world and made it into a wasteland? Is this the king who demolished the world’s greatest cities and had no mercy on his prisoners?’” Isaiah 14:16, 17, NLT.
Notice, Satan has no mercy on those he holds in bondage. And those like him still live in our world today. They have taken up his cause by trying to silence the voice of liberty that screams from the inside of lost humanity. The cry for freedom that exists within the heart of every man, woman, and child is unquenchable, indomitable, and undeniable; it’s God’s gift to all mankind. Those who seek to quench and silence it are nothing more than Satan’s assassins seeking to tear mankind from his natural state of being — liberty.
Yes, that’s the natural born state of all mankind. We are born free. Liberty is our birthright; it’s our God given promise; it’s God’s provision to everyone who lives, moves, and walks on this earth. To steal anyone’s liberty is one of the gravest things that anyone can do. To make someone, anyone, your slave is the gravest of sins, for it fights against the very heart of what God gave to all mankind — liberty. Yes, liberty is God’s gracious gift to all mankind and that liberty is written anew in the heart of mankind each and every time a baby is born — babies are born under the shadow of the tree of liberty.
I have never seen a child born a slave. No, every child is born free. Slavery is learned through the trials of life we face in this world. Liberty is our natural state, as revealed in the eyes of a baby. Slavery is unnatural, hellish, and demonic, and it’s also easily seen in the eyes of its captives. Yes, nature itself testifies to the blessing of liberty and each of us is liberty’s witness. And each of us is called to share our testimony of how liberty has impacted us. That’s the human existence: to be liberty’s witness, as we stand trial before sin’s slavery where Satan seeks to keep us silent.
No! I will not be silent! I will testify to all who will listen of the blessing of liberty, for we are all her witnesses and guardians. And sharing your testimony further releases liberty to touch the lives of others around us. As scripture says, so I say to you, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty with which Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” Galatians 5:1, Webster’s Bible Translation. Take up liberty’s cause and do her bidding all the days of your life and you will never lack an opportunity to fight for what’s good, right, and just all the days of your life. Yes, stand under liberty’s shadow and find your rest all you weary souls, for freedom awaits you.
That’s the blessing of liberty — “Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.” Isaiah 58:6. And it’s where we find the blessing of God Himself who gave us — all mankind — the tree of liberty to eat from in the garden. Yes, it’s our heritage and gift to eat the blessed fruit of the tree of liberty and carry the burden of her harvest to the next generation. And O what a joyous life and glorious battle it is — fighting for liberty’s bell to be rung and liberty’s voice to be heard throughout the land.
Yes, “proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you” Leviticus 25:10, NKJV. That’s our call and command at this time in this month, The Liberty Month, July 2026.
